<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Recently I was lucky enough to purchase two ipad minis from Donors Choose. The parents at my school, as well as friends and family, made this purchase possible. We are so excited to be using the ipads on a daily basis to learn more about art, explore famous paintings, edit our own art projects, practice animation, and travel to places around the world! Here are some of our recent projects!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Kindergartners have been learning about American artist, Charley Harper, and have used a great app that explores his artwork. It is called Peekaboo Forest and is an interactive game that allows children to "find" Charley Harper animals hiding in their habitats.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">First graders learned about Wayne Thiebaud and used the Percolator app to edit their own projects.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Second graders have been using the Play Art app to dissect and reassemble elements from famous works of art to create their own versions of famous paintings.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Third graders have been learning about the portraits of Guiseppe Arcimboldo and have used the app, Faces iMake, to create their own fruit and vegetable portraits!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Fourth graders have been learning about Spanish artist, Joan Miro, and have created their own Miro-like creatures using the Zolo app.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">My class sizes are usually 30-35 and I keep a checklist to make sure the ipads are rotated. Using both ipads, usually it will take us three class periods to create a project and pass them around so everyone has a turn. They do this while they are working on another hands-on art project!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We are loving our new technology in the art room and can't wait to delve further into this new experience! Thank you, donors!!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We just loved celebrating International Dot Day at our school this year! After reading "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds, students from Kindergarten through fifth grade created dot-themed art projects to start the year. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you" was the perfect message for our young artists. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Fifth Graders made these exploding dots. Their paper sculptures were bright, vibrant, and very fun! Students loved this project and the results were stunning.</span> </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was so inspired by the following post from the blog, That Artist Woman, I could not wait to try this project. Please refer here: <a href="http://www.thatartistwoman.org/2012/02/how-to-make-file-folder-books.html">http://www.thatartistwoman.org/2012/02/how-to-make-file-folder-books.html</a> for the original post/lesson plan! I adapted it slightly to fit our project.Gail is a wonderful art teacher and I just adore her blog-so inspirational!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We created these books out of file folders. Here are the steps we followed to create them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day One: Painted file folders (I pre-folded and stapled them) with tempera paints</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Two: Assembled books by attaching yarn to the binding, adding beads and letters to clothespins, adding metallic paint or modge podge, and titled our books</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Three: Keith Haring Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Four: James Rizzi Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Five: Roy Lichtenstein Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Six: George Rodrigue Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Seven: Wayne Thiebaud Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Eight: Andy Warhol Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Nine: Jackson Pollock Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Day Ten: Aminah Robinson Exploration</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Basically, I taught a mini lesson about the artist and his/her work. We often used the artist's official website (for example, Aminah Robinson and Keith Haring have great websites for kids!) The students then created a mini work of art to go inside their books. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

On our last day they completed a little Jeopardy game where they had read a statement about an artist and identify which artist was being discussed. </div><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Rangoli is the art of drawing images and designs on the floor with colored sand, rice, or flour. It is a form of folk art from India and stands as a sign of welcome and thought to bring good luck. The designs are geometric and proportioned. Patterns are made with fingers. They can be any size ranging from the size of a doormat to covering an entire room. Rangoli is designed with the help of dots, which are joined to form a pattern. The pattern is then filled with colors.</span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In India, this art is temporary. Each design stays only for a day or two, as it is often redone as part of a daily routine. One of the most popular arts among Indian women, rangoli is an age old custom. Designs are passed down through the generations, some of them being hundreds of years old.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;">Fifth grade students connected Math and Art and created these symmetrical designs inspired by Rangoli images. They were able to use sand to fill their designs.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Second grade students sure had fun making their aliens with marker and pastel. We talked about different shapes for their bodies, different types of ears, multiple eyes, arms, etc. During the next class, students created a space background with metallic paint and pastels. They also each completed a writing activity to accompany their art! They answered questions about their aliens, such as "what is the name of your alien's planet?" and "use attributes to describe that planet!" Their creativity flourished in this lesson!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

It may become one of my new favorites. Once again I was inspired by Patty's awesome website, Deep Space Sparkle. In particular, this lesson was the basis for our project : </span><a href="http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/02/06/van-gogh-flowers-art-lesson/"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/02/06/van-gogh-flowers-art-lesson/</span></a><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">. I made copies of her handout after I bought the PDF version of this lesson. It was a great handout and it was especially helpful to certain special needs children who tried this lesson. The step by step approach on the handout was the reason one child with autism was able to find so much success for this project! I highly recommend purchasing her PDF.</span></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">After students learned about Vincent Van Gogh, they drew their vases and flowers. They use tints and shades of yellow to paint the petals. During the next art class, they used colored pastels to decorate their flowers and table cloths. The results were stunning. It was a true success!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I believe, as art teachers, that we should try to tie in and supplement the regular curriculum whenever possible. One little way I do that is through writing. Writing can be done as a "warm up" or as a "wind down." It can take up a whole lesson or it can fill a few minutes. Writing in art can be done in so many creative ways. Here are just some of the ways I include writing with my lessons.</span><br />
<br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Have students write an Artist Statement to attach to their projects. I ask my students to discuss their inspiration, the process they used to create their art, and any personal stories relating to their art. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">30 Second Look is one of my favorite activities, especially in the elementary. If you have an interactive white board, display a work of art for 30 seconds and then have students make a list of as many things they can remember from the art.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Display a work of art and have each student write a "hook" to make their reader more excited to learn more about that painting.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Create a five senses chart for a work of art. Pretending you are inside the painting, what do you feel? taste? smell? see? hear?</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Create a writing that details the process followed to create a work of art. Use transition words and pictures.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Create a KWL chart before a lesson. For example, before I teach Egyptian Art I ask them what they KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, and then what they've LEARNED after the project is finished.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Have reflection journals where students can not only draw sketches, but make notes about what they like about their art, what they would change, etc.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Have students write about the art of another student.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Younger children can simply describe what they see in a work of art. </span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have come to embrace writing in my curriculum rather than dread having to enforce that activity. There are easy ways to do so. I truly believe it's important to show administrators, parents, and fellow teachers that art is a class that is beneficial and supportive in many ways. </span>Elementary Art Roomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11939071910359649450noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1446809655359898629.post-34132562227992941382012-03-01T12:09:00.000-05:002012-03-01T12:09:07.727-05:00Gertrude McFuzz<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1jU6HBytiY/T0-swddotUI/AAAAAAAAATU/p8yyqSkTI8M/s1600/DSCN0161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1jU6HBytiY/T0-swddotUI/AAAAAAAAATU/p8yyqSkTI8M/s400/DSCN0161.jpg" uda="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Reading month, first graders made some Truffula trees in Art class. Inspired by the book <u>The Lorax</u>, first graders drew, cut, and pasted these fun creations.</span><span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">“It’s a Truffula seed,</span></div><span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.</span></div><span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.</span></div><span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Third graders made these awesome Greek vases and columns. We began by looking at many examples of pottery from Ancient Greece. Many of the pictures on the pots and vessels told stories about life in Ancient Greece. They also had beautiful patterns and designs. Third graders made styrofoam prints of their vases and finished their work with a Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian column.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
