Wayne Thiebaud Cakes

Here is a quick, one day project that the kids just loved. We have just finished our pinterest-inspired tints and shades ice cream cones and we have been talking all about artist Wayne Thiebaud. Today we showed the children how to draw cylinders, stack them, and decorate them to make fanciful cakes. We provided some pictures of beautifully decorated cakes from a local bakery. The kids LOVED this project! This would be an excellent project to leave for a substitute.

Wayne Thiebaud is a fun artist! His depictions of cakes, pies, ice cream, and collections of toys make his art so appealing to children. Second graders just finished some Thiebaud projects. Here are our lollipops, made from model magic and watercolor paints, and our gumball machines!

Wayne Thiebaud Creations

I love the art of Wayne Thiebaud. His colorful depictions of ice cream cones, cakes, gumball machines, and collections of toys are great for working with kids! For this project, we created a background with tissue paper painting. We lay pieces of wet tissue paper onto white drawing paper and when it's dry, it leaves a beautiful print from bleeding colors.

Children then used silver paint and oil pastels to make a cupcake holder and joint compound mixed with paint to "frost" the cupcakes. Colored rice was used for sprinkles!
